An institution devoted to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value. First khown use: circa 1660 (Miriam-Webster)

A building in which objects of historical, scientific, artistic, or cultural interest are stored and exhibited. Origin: Early 17th century (denoting a university building, specifically one erected at Alexandria by Ptolemy Soter): via Latin from Greek mouseion ‘seat of the Muses’, based on mousa ‘muse’ (Oxford Dictionary)

An institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance. Many public museums make these items available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary (Edward Porter Alexander, Mary Alexander. Museums in motion: an introduction to the history and functions of museums. Rowman & Littlefield. 2008. Retrieved from Wikipedia, September 2017)

Sebelas Maret University Museum

Museum in Indonesia has a long history. Currently the museum has been used as an informal medium that is able to assist formal education institutions such as schools and universities in an effort to provide information about the history of civilization and life. The community is increasingly aware of the role and significance of the museum, not just as a place of pleasure and past experience, but also glorified for the benefit of the study and research of the complex dynamics of culture. The role has slowly positioned the function of the museum to become more open to the interests and progress of society.

The idea of establishing a Campus Museum at Sebelas Maret University Surakarta, hereinafter referred to as UNS Museum, is based on the idea that (1) It is necessary to collect and safeguard UNS’s historical heritage collection covering documentation, conservation and preservation. (2) The UNS Museum is a source of new knowledge as a counterweight, companion, and identity much needed to support World Class University. (3) The visualization room of the history of the founding of UNS which is a fusion of three State Universities namely IKIP Surakarta, Sports High School (STO), and Academy of Business Administration (AAN) Negeri Surakarta; and 7 (seven) private universities (PTS): PTPN Veteran Surakarta Branch, Saraswati National University, Cokroaminoto University (UNCOK), Indonesian Islamic University (UII) Surakarta Branch, Universitas Tujuh Belas Agustus (UNTAG) Surakarta Branch, Jurnaslistic Institute of Indonesia Surakarta, and Akademi Farming Surakarta.

Museum is a manifestation of knowledge that involves mind and potential. Collection of historical objects to be presented thematically and permanently is an inspiration that fosters gratitude and appreciation, enhances devotion to God, and stimulates student creativity. National Museum of Indonesia

(The history of the National Museum of Indonesia (NMI) taken from Wikipedia)

On April 24, 1778, a group of Dutch intellectuals established a scientific institution under the name Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, (Royal Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences). This private body had the aim of promoting research in the field of arts and sciences, especially in history, archaeology, ethnography and physics, and publish the various findings.

One of the founders – JCM Radermacher – donated a building and a collection of cultural objects and books, which were of great value to start off a museum and library for the society Due to the growing collections, General Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles built a new premises on Jalan Majapahit No. 3 at the beginning of the 19th century and named it the Literary Society. In the 1862 the Dutch East Indies government decided to build a new museum that would not only serve as an office but also could be used to house, preserve and display the collections.

The Museum was officially opened in 1868 and popularly known as Gedung Gajah (Elephant Building) or sometimes called Gedung Arca (The house of Statues). It was called Gedung Gajah on account of the bronze elephant statue in the front yard – a gift to Batavia from King Chulalongkorn of Siam in 1871. It was also called Gedung Arca because a great variety of statues from different periods are on display in the house.
